Neighborhood


Formerly the center of Oakland’s port activity, Jack London Square is one of Oakland’s oldest and most energetic neighborhoods. Just walk through the area where wholesale Oakland Produce Market now resides on Franklin between 2nd and 4th streets in the early morning hours! The market has linked rural farms to Oakland grocers for the past century, utilizing warehouses for storage and selling. Present day, the market has 20 vendors which supply local buyers with hand-picked fruit and vegetables each week. Buyers come for the freshest produce–sometimes within 24 hours of being picked from local farms. If you sleep in you will miss the morning activity, but you will enjoy the fresh produce likely served in one of the neighborhood’s fantastic restaurants like The Fat Lady, Chop Bar, Forge, or Farmhouse Kitchen! 

Jack London Square was formerly the hub of all Oakland’s port activity. Named after the novelist and social activist Jack London, who spent his youth here watching the ships coming through the port.
